Welcome to Showgirl Winter Workshops: a festive, 5-class dance-intensive for dancers wanting to tap into the glam, grit, and some sparkling showgirl tech with a touch of holiday spirit. Led by Halie Scaletta, director of The Lolas, this set of winter workshops is designed for dancers with at least an intermediate jazz foundation who are eager to level up their performance skills, deepen their understanding of showgirl technique, and celebrate the intersection of art, athleticism, and sensuality.

• Monday Dec 8 | “Nutcracker Suite” - The Brian Setzer Orchestra
  This workshop’s choreo will focus on the high-energy, high-kicking holiday stylings of the Radio City Rockettes. You can expect sharp upper body movements, delicious jazz tech, and of course- a kick-line!

• Thursday Dec 11 | “Jingle Bells?” Barbara Streisand
  This workshop’s choreo will focus on comedic timing and inserting physical comedy into your performance with Babs’ delightful take on a classic. This crash-course on acting for dancers stars you, the dancer, as the bumbling host of a bustling holiday dinner party, all while remembering your 5, 6, 7, 8s!

• Monday Dec 15 |“Sugar Rum Cherry” Duke Ellington
  This workshop’s choreo will be steeped in slow, sultry jazz musicality. With a flavor of fosse and lots of time-stopping control, you can expect to feel like you’re draped in black velvet at a jazz club.

• Thursday Dec 18 | “Jing a Ling Jing a Ling” - The Andrews Sisters
  This workshop will be a Rockette-Style tap combination taught by Lola and tap-superstar, Paige Fullerton! Expect quick direction changes, upbeat musicality, high-energy tap combinations, and the most fun you’ve had while counting to 8. This workshop is recommended for experienced tappers at an intermediate level or above.

• Monday Dec 22 | “December” - Earth, Wind, and Fire
  A signature of The Lolas Showgirls, this Disco Jazz workshop will have you grooving to an upbeat disco track while your choreography is full of high kicks, syncopated grooves, and all the jazz tech you love!

Each 90-minute session includes:

• A full warmup rooted in showgirl-specific alignment and mobility

• Targeted conditioning with a breakdown of the why and how behind building the strength and endurance for cleaner tuns, higher kicks, and stronger stability.

• Choreography that fuses theater jazz, classic showgirl stylings, and contemporary flair. Expect individualized feedback enthusiastic encouragement! Dancers can opt-into the weekly filming option after each class for professional footage they can keep.

• Last 10 minutes of class designated for filming for dancers who wish to document their class, their progress, or get practice in front of the camera. Being filmed is completely optional.

This intensive is a space for intermediate to professional-level dancers to dive deeper into this rich, nuanced, and often misunderstood genre while sweating, learning, and performing with purpose.

Recommended footwear: 

The Lolas’ favourite shoe is a 3.75” flared heel ballroom shoe. BY FAR our favourite brand is Vivaz (out of Australia, available online). They’re unbelievably supportive and comfortable, and excellent customer service. We recommend the Kira or Paris styles! 

Filming of this class, and subsequently its participants, may take place at any point for archival and promotional purposes on behalf of The Lolas.
